United Nations Adopts ‘Equal Earth’ World Maps Lesson Plan

On 4 September 2026 the UN General Assembly voted 164-1 to encourage equal-area world maps. This lesson turns that vote into a study of how a cartographic choice made four centuries ago still shapes what students think the world looks like.

In this lesson, students will explore and compare different map projections to determine their strengths and limitations.

Side note: I’ve always loved teaching about map projections. I especially find tools like ‘The True Size Of’ found in the slides and links really engaging for students!
